Regret, A Dangerous Cycle: Move Towards Acceptance and Peace Today

May 14, 2013
A lot of life's regrets come down to poor decision making.

A lot of life’s regrets come down to poor decision making.

There are a lot of things in life that make us happy, but as you know, these are not the only kind of experiences we have. We also have experiences that make us unhappy. Which is your favorite? Which do you give more attention too?

Most of the unhappy things in our lives can be traced back to decisions we’ve made along the way.

How many times have you thought to yourself, “I wish I could go back and do it differently”?

For Future Decisions

Before making any major decision, we should think deliberately about all its consequences before coming to a final decision. By weighing the future consequences of our decisions, we can hopefully avoid regret later down the line.

Struggling With Regret

But guess what? You’re almost always working with imperfect information and even though you consider the consequences, you’re still going to make some mistakes. Hello regret.

Many people struggle with regret and often it holds them back from experiencing a full and happy life. Fear puts us on the sidelines. It keeps us from moving forward.

Moving On

Redirecting your thinking patterns away from missed opportunities is a powerful way to move on from regret. With a little practice, you can shift from the state of mind and emotions that regret brings and move towards acceptance and peace. It can also help you regain and strengthen your confidence.

So you never got to backpack through Europe. You find yourself thinking about the decisions you made that kept you from going. “This led to thatI should haveI didn’t know about…” rinse, repeat- a dangerous cycle.

The Other Side

Instead of investing in this thinking pattern, invest in a more constructive one. Consider all of the beauty that’s available in your life now. Think of all the things you’re appreciative of.

A Helpful Exercise

Make a list of everything in your life you’re appreciative of. Take a few moments and consider all dimensions of your life. When you’re finished, stand up, and with strong body language, read the list out loud. Supporting your words with physiology adds a lot of energy to your action.

Keep this list. Add something new to it as often as you can. Read your ever-revising list out loud once a day. Soon you’ll come to see and know all the value that’s in your current life. Your mind will come to realize that it’s far more beneficial to focus on what you have then what you think you missed out on.

it’s a game called life. we can’t be always looking back to the things we’ve done in the past. it’s the past, we don’t live there anymore. what we have to do is have faith in the future

    • Thanks for sharing your insight Sarutobi and I agree with you that we should let go of the past and should use our time in living the present and look forward to the future.

  33. To be truly happy, we really need to move on… especially from all the things that hurt us, from bad decisions to indecision that we’ve made, from all negativity. When we dwell so much on the past or on having regrets, then we’ll just be making another mistake and so on. Regret will only hinder us in fulfilling our dreams so forget it. Live on and be happy!

Even so, I beg your pardon, but I can not subscribe to your entire idea, all be it refreshing none the less. It looks to me that your opinions are not totally rationalized and in simple fact you are generally your self not even fully convinced of your assertion. In any event I did appreciate reading through it.
